What Is the Difference Between 500D and 1000D CORDURA?

Denier is a unit of yarn linear density: the mass in grams of 9,000 metres of yarn. A 1000D yarn therefore has twice the mass per unit length of a 500D yarn, but that does not mean the finished fabric automatically has twice the abrasion resistance, tear strength or service life.

When the fibre type, weave and other conditions are similar, a higher denier generally indicates a heavier, more substantial yarn. The weight and feel of the finished fabric can still vary with weave density, coatings and laminated structures. For an everyday backpack, 500D is a useful place to start comparing options, while also checking the empty weight and whether the shoulder straps suit daily use.

1000D is also used in backpacks, bags and footwear; it is not limited to military boots. The reason to choose it should come from the demands of the finished product rather than simply chasing a higher number. Is CORDURA Waterproof? Water Repellency Is Not the Same as a Waterproof Product
